This individual is a piece of work. That's putting it mildly. It's probably more accurate to say that few people have professionalized and mainstreamed thuggery and criminalism like Tom Delay.
Here are a few of my favorite hits from his long and distiguished career as a shakedown artist for the elite:
- His trip to the island of Saipan. While there, he claimed that Saipan was a model for what the market should be doing in America. Here's a quick rundown about Saipan: it's a sweatshop-infested factory owner's paradise. There are no labor laws enforced, and products made there carry the "Made in America label". Workers are routinely forced to work overtime wihtout overtime pay, pregnant women allege that their employers force them to have abortion, while others are forced into the streets to prostitution. Which is like, so totally pro-life, man.
- On why he didn't volunteer for the Vietnam War: Too many minorities had taken all those high-paying grunt gigs. Y'know, cuz slogging through rice-paddies was like, a dream job, dude. My father would have beaten this many to a bloody pulp if he were still around to hear this most pathetic drivel, as he actually served two tours. This one makes me especially angry.
- The time he held open a vote on the recent medicare bill for three hours. To give this perspective, when Delay ran for congress, he pointed to a Democrat-led 20-minute vote hold as an extreme abuse of power.
- The time he pushed the House Ethics Committee to kill a rule that Republicans put in place in the early 90's--that no one in congress could hold a leadership position if they're under indictment. They later reversed themselves when the stink rose to the high heavens.
Here's the thing about Tom Delay--he's arguably the 2nd most powerful person in Washington DC besides President Cheney. And he's as corrupt as the day is long.
He's. Not. Alone.
Time to throw the bastards out.
Cuz, hey the competition just loves Tom Delay.
