This is beyond screwed up. The city of New Orleans was apparently going to have free wireless set up in the hope that it would attract new technology types back to resettle the city. Lots of cities are pushing this right now, Philadelphia among them. Sometimes I hear chatter that Chicago might go the same route. It's a good idea, extending internet access to as many as possible.
Bellsouth caught wind of this unfortunate attempt to bring technology to an underserved community and withdrew its offer to host rebuilding efforts in one of its buildings. Not that they'd put community development behind corporate profits in terms of importance.
